Talibah V. O. Byron was called to the Bar of St. Kitts and Nevis in August 2011 and joined Byron & Byron in that month.
Talibah practises in several areas including commercial, administrative and constitutional law, and estate management. She has undertaken criminal litigation work on referral from The Death Penalty Practice (UK), which has included her work as a part of a team which succeeded in having the courts quash the death sentence of the last person who sat on Death Row in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Talibah has appeared before all levels of the Court up to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London, England, currently the final court of appeal for St. Kitts and Nevis.
Chambers and Partners has ranked Talibah in 2021 and 2022 as an Up-and-Coming Lawyer who is “increasingly prominent”. She was described by interviewees as “smart, engaging and very nice to deal with.”
She is a Notary Public, a Mediator, and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
An Accredited Director, Talibah provides expertise and leadership through service on the boards of local companies. She is also pleased to chair the Board of the George Moody Stuart School, her former elementary school. A gender equality advocate, she is the Founder and Managing Director of The Survivor Network which empowers and protects survivors of domestic violence and provides them pro bono legal representation. In August 2021 she was one of 25 women selected to join the Women in Politics and Leadership Institute (WIPLI) sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados. She serves as Legal Officer on the National Women’s Council of St. Kitts and Nevis.
She founded in the East Basseterre Free Legal Advice Centre in 2015. Also in 2015, Talibah was awarded the International Women’s Day Award for outstanding contribution to her country in the field of law, a joint award by the Ministries of Gender Affairs and Community Development of St. Kitts.
Talibah previously completed prestigious internships at the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and at the Caribbean Court of Justice which have equipped her with enviable experience and skill in legal research and drafting. She earned the commendation of Judges at both international Courts for the assistance she provided to them on various high-profile, seminal cases. She has also been shaped by her experience as an Investigator in the Office of the Public Defender of Jamaica, where as a law student she investigated allegations of serious human rights violations committed by Security Forces in Tivoli Gardens, West Kingston, Jamaica during the State of Emergency in May 2010. Following her investigations, Talibah prepared briefs in support of numerous victims of human rights violations to receive compensation from the State.
Talibah is a die-hard fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and highly trained in classical piano.
