Talibah Byron-Chiverton
Talibah V. O. Byron-Chiverton was called to the Bar of St. Kitts and Nevis in the year 2011 and has amassed considerable experience, successfully appearing in complex landmark cases before all court levels including the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London, England, which is currently the highest appellate court for St. Kitts and Nevis. She is known for her tactful and resourceful problem-solving, her keen attention to detail, and her poise under pressure.
Chambers & Partners Global Rankings has consistently ranked Talibah among the most talented lawyers in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and has identified her as “an increasingly prominent lawyer” who is “smart and engaging”.
As a proud gender justice advocate, Talibah is well-known for her strong advocacy and representation of survivors of gender-based violence and domestic violence in St. Kitts and Nevis. She is a past honoree of the Ministries of Gender Affairs and Community Development with the International Women’s Day Award for contributions in the field of law. Also, in December of 2022, the Ministry of Gender Affairs named Talibah among the inaugural inductees to the Gender Champions Wall of Fame. She was also selected to join the Women in Politics and Leadership Institute (WIPLI) sponsored by the United States Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Talibah’s wide pro bono practice has seen her work tirelessly to rectify miscarriages of justice and uphold the due administration of the justice system. She has undertaken work with The Death Penalty Project (UK) for many years. This has included her work as part of a team which succeeded in having the courts quash the death sentence of the last person who sat on Death Row in St. Kitts and Nevis, and also included the successful quashing of a murder conviction due to a manifestly unfair hearing some 21 years earlier.
She is a Notary Public, a Mediator, and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
An Accredited Director, Talibah provides expertise and leadership through service on the boards of local companies and organizations, and is available for appointment.
Talibah previously completed prestigious internships at the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and at the Caribbean Court of Justice which have equipped her with enviable experience and skill in legal research and drafting. She earned the commendation of Judges at both international Courts for the assistance she provided to them on various seminal cases. She has also been shaped by her experience as an Investigator in the Office of the Public Defender of Jamaica, where she investigated allegations of serious human rights violations committed by Security Forces in Tivoli Gardens, West Kingston, Jamaica during the State of Emergency in May 2010. Following her investigations, Talibah prepared briefs in support of numerous victims of human rights violations to receive compensation from the State.
Talibah is a die-hard fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and highly trained in classical piano.
